Ayurveda for Indigestion- Common Ayurvedic Medicines

In Ayurveda for indigestion is known as “ajirna” and it is considered to be a result of an imbalance in the digestive fire (agni). This can lead to incomplete digestion of food and the formation of toxins (ama) in the body.

  • Vataja grahani: This type of grahni is caused by an imbalance of the vata dosha (air and space element), leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, constipation, and flatulence.
  • Pittaja grahani: This type of grahni is caused by an aggravation of the pitta dosha (fire and water element), leading to symptoms such as acidity, heartburn, and diarrhea.
  • Kaphaja grahani: This type of grahni is caused by an imbalance of the kapha dosha (water and earth element), leading to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and bloating.

Symptoms of indigestion in Ayurveda may include abdominal pain, bloating, gas, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. There are several factors that can lead to indigestion, including improper food combinations, overeating, eating too fast, and stress.

Treatment in Ayurveda for Indigestion involves improving the strength of the digestive fire and removing any toxins that have accumulated in the body. This is typically done through a combination of dietary and lifestyle changes, herbal remedies, and detoxification therapies such as Panchakarma.

Common Causes Of Grahni/Indigestion

In Ayurveda For indigestion or “ajirna” can have many causes, including:

  • Weak digestive fire (agni): When the digestive fire is weak, food is not properly digested, leading to the formation of toxins (ama) in the body.
  • Poor eating habits: Eating too quickly, eating while distracted, overeating, or consuming heavy, oily, or spicy foods can all lead to indigestion.
  • Incompatible food combinations: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of food combining, and certain combinations of foods can be difficult to digest and lead to indigestion. For example, combining milk with sour fruits can cause indigestion.
  • Stress: Stress can affect the digestive system, leading to indigestion.
  • Imbalance in the doshas: When the three doshas (vata, pitta, and kapha) are imbalanced, it can lead to indigestion.
  • Irregular meal timings: Eating meals at irregular times can cause indigestion as the digestive system is not able to prepare itself for the intake of food.
  • Overindulgence in cold or iced beverages: Ayurveda believes that consuming cold beverages can weaken the digestive fire and lead to indigestion.
  • Poor lifestyle habits: Lack of exercise, inadequate sleep, and excess consumption of alcohol and tobacco can also contribute to indigestion.

Home Remedies For Grahni Roga

In Ayurveda, there are several home remedies that can be helpful for grahni roga, which refers to a group of disorders related to the digestive system. These remedies can help to balance the doshas and improve the strength of the digestive fire (agni), promoting healthy digestion.

  • Ginger tea: Drinking ginger tea can help to improve digestion and reduce inflammation in the digestive system. Simply grate a small piece of fresh ginger root, add it to boiling water, and let it steep for a few minutes. Strain and drink the tea.
  • Cumin water: Drinking cumin water can help to improve digestion and reduce bloating. Simply boil one teaspoon of cumin seeds in a cup of water for a few minutes, strain, and drink. Herbal decoction water is really good in Ayurveda for indigestion.
  • Fennel seeds: Chewing on fennel seeds after meals can help to improve digestion and reduce gas and bloating.
  • Triphala: Triphala is an herbal formula in Ayurveda for indigestion that can be helpful for improving digestion and reducing inflammation in the digestive system. It is available in powder or capsule form and can be taken with water before bed.
  • Aloe vera juice: Drinking aloe vera juice can help to soothe inflammation in the digestive system and improve digestion. 

Common Ayurvedic Medicines For Indigestion:-

  1. Hingvastak churna: As per ayurveda for indigestion this is an herbal powder that can be helpful for improving digestion and reducing gas and bloating. It contains a combination of herbs including hing (asafoetida), cumin, and ginger.
  1. Trikatu churna: This is an Ayurvedic herbal powder that can be helpful for improving digestion and reducing inflammation in the digestive system. It contains a combination of three spices: black pepper, long pepper, and ginger.
  1. Avipattikar churna: This is an Ayurvedic herbal powder that can be helpful for reducing acidity and inflammation in the digestive system. It contains a combination of herbs including amla, haritaki, and bibhitaki.
  1. Kutajarishta: Ayurveda for indigestion suggests that herbal tonic that can be helpful for treating diarrhea and other digestive disorders. It contains the bark of the kutaja tree and other herbs.
  1. Chitrakadi vati: This is an Ayurvedic herbal tablet that can be helpful for improving digestion and reducing gas and bloating. It contains a combination of herbs including chitrak, ginger, and black pepper.

Some common herbal remedies for indigestion in Ayurveda include shunthi, ajwain, and coriander. Ayurveda also emphasizes the importance of mindful eating habits such as eating slowly, chewing food well, and avoiding distractions while eating.
