Ayurveda for Janu Basti

Janu Basti is an Ayurvedic treatment that involves pouring warm medicated oil or herbal decoction over the knee joint and allowing it to penetrate deeply into the tissues. The word “Janu” means knee and “Basti” means a container or retaining fluid, so Janu Basti refers to the act of retaining warm oil on the knee joint.

This treatment is used to alleviate knee pain and stiffness, reduce inflammation and swelling, and improve mobility. It is often recommended for individuals with knee arthritis, osteoarthritis, and other knee-related disorders.

During the treatment, a well of dough is made around the knee joint, which is then filled with warm medicated oil or herbal decoction. The oil is kept in place for a period of time, usually around 20-30 minutes. After the treatment, the oil is removed, and gentle massage is done to the knee joint.

According to Ayurveda, joint pain is caused by an imbalance of the three doshas, or energy forces, in the body: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Here’s a brief overview of how each dosha can contribute to joint pain:

  • Vata Dosha: Vata is responsible for the movement and circulation of the body, including the joints. When Vata is imbalanced, it can lead to dryness, stiffness, and cracking in the joints, as well as pain and inflammation.
  • Pitta Dosha: Pitta is responsible for metabolism and digestion, and when it is imbalanced, it can lead to inflammation and heat in the body, which can contribute to joint pain.
  • Kapha Dosha: Kapha is responsible for structure and lubrication in the body, and when it is imbalanced, it can lead to excess fluid buildup in the joints, as well as stiffness and swelling.

Common causes of joint pain according to Ayurveda include:

  • Poor digestion and metabolism lead to the accumulation of toxins (ama) in the joints.
  • Exposure to cold or damp conditions aggravates Vata dosha and causes joint stiffness and pain.
  • Imbalanced lifestyle habits, such as lack of exercise, irregular sleep patterns, and stress can contribute to imbalances in all three doshas.
  • Poor dietary habits and food choices, lead to the accumulation of Ama, leading to inflammation and pain in the joints.
  • Excessive use of technology leads to a sedentary lifestyle leading to the accumulation of toxins in the joints.
  • Genetic factors may predispose individuals to certain joint-related conditions.

Ayurvedic treatments for joint pain typically involve rebalancing the doshas through dietary and lifestyle changes, as well as the use of herbal remedies, therapies such as Janu Basti, and regular exercise to improve circulation and reduce inflammation.
