Ayurveda For Weight Loss

Weight loss

Emaciation is the condition of weight loss. It is called as Krishata in Ayurveda. Emaciation, itself is rarely a disease, but can refer to the important symptoms of other various diseases. Weight loss is one of the effects of malnutrition. First of all, we need to go through the concept of dhatus in Ayurveda for weight loss.


Concept of Dhatus in Ayurveda

Dhatu can be referred as the structural basis of our body. They are seven in number. They are Rasa (body fluids, lymph), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscles), Meda (body fat, adipose tissues), Asthi (bony structures), Majja (bone marrow) and Shukra (sperm and ovum).

Rasa dhatu is the primary one which is nourished from the food we intake. Then the other dhatus are subsequently formed from the previous one. If the Rasa dhatu is not formed properly, it will obviously reduce the formation of other dhatus and weight loss occurs.


Signs of weight loss

The definition in Ayurveda for weight loss includes the specific signs as follows:

  1. thinning of the muscles of the neck, abdomen and buttock region
  2. prominence of veins on the body surface
  3. the joints are seen enlarged

Causes

The broad concept in Ayurveda for weight loss includes the causes, its pathogenesis, signs and symptoms and the proper way of management. Among these, the causes of the disease are given more priority.

There is main role of the Vata dosha in causing Krishata (weight loss). So, the causes that vitiate Vata dosha are main responsible for it.

  1. Dietary causes
    1. excessive intake of dry food items
    2. fasting
    3. intake of less amount of diet
    4. excessive intake of astringent tastes
    5. no intake of balanced diet
  2. Habitary causes
    1. suppression of the natural urges
    2. improper sleep at night
    3. excessive indulgence in sexual activities
    4. excessive physical exertion
    5. suppression of hunger and thirst
    6. old age
    7. getting diseases at regular intervals
    8. improper use of detoxification techniques
  3. Psychological causes
    1. sadness
    2. fear
    3. anger
    4. grief
  4. Other causes
    1. malnutrition
    2. gastro intestinal diseases
    3. marasmus
    4. addison’s disease
    5. tuberculosis
    6. anorexia nervosa
    7. cancer
    8. diabetes
    9. suppuration
    10. hyperthyroidism
    11. chronic diarrhea
    12. stricture of oesophagus
    13. pyloric obstruction
    14. parasites infection
    15. loss of sleep
    16. exopthalmic goiter
    17. starvation
    18. AIDS

Symptoms

  1. thinning of the muscles of the neck, abdomen and buttock region

  4. no interest in exercise and food
  5. laziness
  6. intolerance to hot and cold
  7. decreased stamina
  8. more prone to Vataja diseases

Management principles

Avoid the causes

The main treatment principle in Ayurveda for weight loss and every other disease is the avoidance of the causes (nidana parivarjanam).
