Post Purificatory Considerations Of Panchakarma

We have earlier discussed Panchakarma procedures as a detoxification process in our body, its pre procedures- The Purvakarma and the five actual actions done under Panchakarma in our previous articles. Panchakarma is one big tool in Ayurveda which helps cleanse the body from deep inside, helps get rid of specific diseases and holistically bring the person back to normalcy. But the purpose of Panchakarma is fully met only when the disposal of the procedure as termed as ‘Sarjan’ in Sanskrit is done properly. There are few precautions to be taken and few regimens to be followed so that we can get properly adjusted to our normal diet and environment after the main procedure and gain strength and vitality. These post-operative treatments can basically be classified into three types.

Types Of Post Purificatory Considerations Of Panchakarma Are:

  • Samsarjan Kram
  • Use of Rasayana and Vajikarana
  • Shamana Chikitsa

In this article, we will discuss how we can revive the subjugated Doshas to their normalcy by using light food and herbs that promote the physiological balance and attain a higher state of health by use of various methods.

1. Samsarjana Karma

After cleansing our body at the gross to subtler levels, the Agni is observed to be of lower strength consequently. As putting large thick wooden sticks on a small fire extinguishes it, likewise, intake of heavy-to-digest foods can cause harsh effects on our Jatharagni, and may even extinguish it. This is why we need to slowly and gradually plan our diet from a lighter easily digestible forms to our normal diet over three to seven days. Starting with Peya, Bilepi, i.e. rice gruels, thin to thick and from non-spiced to that with simple herbal spices are used. Then, slowly khichadi, and then meat soups, that too from non-spiced to spiced is used and gradually this way, the person is shifted to a normal diet. This diet plan is advised to be taken in such a manner that it will help to bring the Agni at its place slowly and systematically.

2. Rasayana and Vajikarana Use

Among the eight branches of Astanga Ayurveda, Rasayana and Vajikarana form two independent branches.

Rasayana is the herbs or herbomineral formulations of Ayurveda that nourish all the seven Dhatu of our body adequately and even helps establish young age by slowing the Ageing process. These Rasayana, the rejuvenators of Ayurveda, through their richness in micronutrients as well as antioxidants, immunomodulators purify and promote the Dhatu increasing immunological and physiochemical strength. To name a few, Guduchi, Amalaki, Aswagandha, Brahmi, Haritaki are most commonly used as Rasayana.

Besides Rasayana, Vajikarana- the aphrodisiac can be used to promote the sexual functioning and reproductive ability in the person. For this purpose, formulations containing Shilajit, Musali, Aswagandha, Shatavari, Bala are used. If the Panchakarma is carried out with a purpose of rejuvenation and for promotive health, Rasayana and Vajikarana can be administered as per need after the Samsarjana Kram is completed to promote vitality and virility.

3. Shamana Karma – The Pacification

Panchakarma is done as a therapeutic process in specific diseases to remove the stagnant and vitiated doshas, and then administer the medicines which are proved to be far more effective after the Panchakarma procedure. Let us consider we have two sets of cloth: one is clean white and the other is dark due to dirt. If we try applying colour to those, it is so obvious that the former catches the colour easily. This also gives us an idea that we better clean any cloth before using colour in it if we want it to be properly colored.

Similarly, when we use a medicine in a person whose body has become polluted due to the accumulated toxins and vitiated doshas, the medicines can’t be as effective. But if we give the same medicine to the same person, after the cleansing process, Panchakarma, it shows significant effect and improvement.

Panchakarma is, therefore, a miraculous process when done under the guidance of experienced personnel. You can be familiar to this procedure and get a lifetime rejuvenating and health promotive experience here in Nepal Ayurveda Home where Ayurveda experts see you in person and aid you in every way possible for the better you.
